New Mexico In Depth will assist in creating an online news hub that will serve as a learning lab for journalism students at the University of New Mexico and also help journalists engage more people.

The Online News Association announced today that UNM was one of the schools whose applications to fund ideas to further journalism education through local news experiments will be funded.

The UNM project, called New Mexico News Port, is still under development. It aims to serve as a hub for collaboration between students and professional journalists. Founding partners include UNM’s journalism program, KUNM-FM, KNME-TV and The Daily Lobo.

“We’re excited to be part of this innovative project and hope it will excite students about journalism,” said Trip Jennings, NMID’s executive director.

The project is being funded through the Online News Association’s “hack the curriculum” challenge. Grants of up to $35,000 were offered to support live, local news experiments.

NMID is not receiving any funding from the grant, which will go to UNM.
