A sign of the state’s shaky finances

Legislation introduced Tuesday should give us all a sense of how troubled New Mexico’s finances are.

House Bill 311, sponsored by Republican Jimmie Hall of Albuquerque, would ‘sweep’ tens of millions of dollars from various state funds into New Mexico’s main checking account — also known as the general fund — to pay for services and programs.

It’s a sign of how shaky the state’s finances are that the New Mexico Legislature is looking far and wide for dollars to add to the general fund.

The Santa Fe New Mexican wrote about the proposal today.
