Several new political advertisers will appear on New Mexico TV stations as Election Day nears.

Democratic Secretary of State candidate Maggie Toulouse Oliver and U.S. Rep. Ben Ray Lujan, who represents northern New Mexico, began airing ads last week.

And the group promoting a general obligation bond initiative for education will air ads beginning Oct. 17.

More than 3,100 political ads will air between Sept. 28 and Nov. 8 at a cost of more than $650,000, according to an analysis of Federal Communications Commission filings by New Mexico In Depth.

That includes ads on cable and satellite TV, but not ads purchased through national networks.

Toulouse Oliver has ads scheduled through Oct. 17 or 23 on several Albuquerque stations and cable. Her opponent, Republican Rep. Nora Espinoza, has yet to contract for TV ads.

And U.S. Rep. Michelle Lujan Grisham increased her ad spending last week, with nearly $117,000 in contracts.

After the special legislative session ended, the Center for Civic Action purchased more TV time to air ads between Oct. 7 and 20.

The group’s ads don’t address the election specifically. But they do paint a critical portrait of Republican Gov. Susana Martinez and her administration.

A disclosure for the latest ads said they focus on “public safety staff/budget shortfalls” and the Children, Youth and Families Department.

Here’s a look at the ad spending in the state from Sept. 28 through Nov. 8:

  1. I’m disgusted at whomever is responsible for the adds showing the dead 5 year old Victoria and her mother. EVEN the news stations have stopped showing them and talking about how she died. You are politicizing it for your agenda? Where is your morality and where is your sense of decency using the voice to say that the child is scared and doesn’t know what to do! That’s abusive to children in my opinion especially when you air this garbage during dinner time or after 3pm when kids are watching TV. Shame on you all. Everyone who came up with this to get the Governor to react when we all know that the “Baby Briana” case was and still is so meaningful to her. Just so you know, I was not planning on voting for her before this add started airing. Now, I do NOT want your candidate to have any chance of winning. The first time I saw it, I said, “Shame on you people. This is disgusting, are they crazy?!” Then it got worse with the little girl voice saying she’s scared and talking about The Governor as if there were any possible way she’s responsible. I just have to shake my head and try to understand why on earth you’d air it even one time! Just shame on you all. Congratulations on making me vote for her to have another term. I can’t stand her.
