Changes are coming to New Mexico In Depth.

First, we’re thrilled to announce Sylvia Ulloa is joining our team.

Sylvia most recently was managing editor of the Las Cruces Sun-News in the agricultural Mesilla Valley in southern New Mexico.

Sylvia brings extensive experience in multi-media reporting and building engagement opportunities. She’ll be instrumental in deepening New Mexico In Depth’s community engagement program going forward, and we are looking forward to on-the-ground reporting from southern New Mexico.

Sylvia started her journalism career as a copy editor in the agricultural Salinas Valley in California and later was a writer and editor at the San Jose (California) Mercury News and El Paso Times. She holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from San Jose State University and the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, respectively. Her interests include food and agriculture, government watchdog and education reporting.

Please welcome Sylvia to NMID’s team.

At the same time we’re introducing Sylvia, we are saying goodbye to Sandra Fish. After nearly three years of digging into data for NMID, Sandra will depart at the end of June to focus on covering politics in Colorado, where she lives.

During her time with NMID Sandra broke new ground in New Mexico journalism with her innovative approaches to rooting out hard-to-come-by information.

That included constructing a 2015 database of more than 2,000 infrastructure projects around the state, enabling NMID and its media partners to scrutinize funding for everything from new and renovated buildings to dam renovation.

She also created NMID’s Follow the Message web application in the lead up to last year’s election, allowing our organization to track some of the money in politics that the public normally wouldn’t see.

Sandra also was instrumental in creating The Openness Project, a partnership between NMID and DataMade, a Chicago-based civic technology firm, that in 2016 converted the Secretary of State’s campaign finance database into a easy-to-search portal for New Mexicans.

NMID is proud of Sandra’s innovative, groundbreaking work over the years. Please join us in wishing her well in her future endeavors.
