New Mexico in Depth is pleased to announce a two-semester professional journalism experience to student journalists of color involved with the New Mexico News Port at the University of New Mexico.

New Mexico in Depth (NMID) is a digital-first journalism organization focused on public policy and institutions, social welfare, and the influence of money in politics. This fellowship reflects NMID’s desire to increase the diversity of the professional journalism field in New Mexico and beyond.

Benefits of the fellowship:

  • $4,500 per semester ($9,000 total, paid in monthly installments).
  • Experience within a professional news organization.
  • Publication on, and potentially by our media partners.
  • One-year membership in a professional organization and attendance at an annual conference to be mutually agreed upon.

Qualifications and requirements:

  • Enrollment in the multimedia journalism major at UNM and involvement with New Mexico News Port, the C&J Department digital news innovation/collaboration lab.
  • Enthusiasm and passion for journalism in the public interest.
  • Diligent work with NMID staff on a weekly basis to produce publishable work.
  • Participation on a team covering the New Mexico legislative session in early 2017, with some travel to Santa Fe required.

The form and number of reported stories by fellows will vary depending on the interests of the fellow. The fellowship may be used to fulfill requirements for internship credit toward the UNM journalism degree. News Port will provide physical space for the fellow, including access to a computer, plus mentorship in collaboration with NMID.
